Russian Icons have always remained an expression of the Russian Orthodox tradition. Being extremely impressive objects of art they not only adorn the church interiors but reveal the most significant theological concepts of the Russian orthodoxy, archetypes and peculiarities of Russian religious conscience.

In Russia, where written philosophical texts did not appear before the 18th century, the  icon was a “speculation in colours” with its specific language of symbols.  In the Icon department of the State Russian museum (around 100 icons which date back to 12 – 16th c.) we will focus on the most important images and symbols, and attempt to approach an understanding of the language of the icon.

During this tour we will also visit the most beautiful churches and monasteries of St. Petersburg, listen to the traditional Russian church choir, get acquainted with the main rites and customs of the Russian Orthodox tradition.
