Gatchina is located 50 km from St.Petersburg beyond Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk. This land was presented by Catherine the Great to her favourite Grigory Orlov.

The palace was designed in the style of a medieval castle by A.Rinaldi. After Orlov had fallen out of favour and died , the Empress granted the palace to her son Paul. During the reign of Paul I the palace was redecorated by V.Brenna to suit the tastes of “Russian Don Quicksot”.

In the end of 19th c. Gatchina was the favourite residence of Alexander III.

Having been badly damaged during the WWII, the palace is still being restored

(some impressive rooms of the Grand Palace are already finished).

Gatchina may not be as spectacular as Peterhof ,Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk but it is worth visiting to have a look at one of the most unusual palaces and enjoy walking in a picturesque park.
