Pushkin and Dostoevsky Walking Tour in St. Petersburg

See the city of Pushkin and Dostoevsky, walk Crime and Punishment district

Pushkin and Dostoevsky Walking Tour in St. Petersburg is a fantastic opportunity to see and experience places and events of the past that you read in such iconic literature masterpieces as  the “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoevsky and the “Bronze Horseman” by Alexander Pushkin.

St. Petersburg has been a continual source of inspiration for poets and writers such as: Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Vladimir Nabokov, Joseph Brodsky, Ayn Rand, and many others. Experience their works come to life as you walk the footsteps of your favorite characters. The town of “The Queen of Spades” and the “Crime and Punishment” does exist in reality. See the houses and neighborhoods which inspired such timeless tales by these literary giants.

It was here that Alexander Pushkin created some of his most famous works such as: “The Bronze Horseman”, “Eugene Onegin”, and “The Queen of Spades”.

We will see a part of the city known as “St.Petersburg of Alexander Pushkin”- a peaceful and beautiful part of the city further away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. Here, you can see the tranquil palaces and mansions along the Moika River. You can visit the Museum of Alexander Pushkin located in the house where he lived, worked, and died.

Fyodor Dostoevsky came to St. Petersburg in the year of Alexander Pushkin’s death (1837). The part of the city where he lived was known as “the guts” of the city at that time. The sensation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s St. Petersburg appeared thanks to the novel “Crime and Punishment” which was written here in 1866. In this famous and “the most St. Petersburgan” novel of all, he gave a detailed, even scrupulous description of the Sennaya Square district.  We will walk the footsteps of the heroes of the novel, see the houses of Raskolnikov, Sonia, and Aliona Ivanovna , and see the houses where the writer lived.

Pushkin and Dostoevsky Walking Tour is highly recommended for the fans of the Russian culture and literature. Without doubt it is the most local experience you can have in St. Petersburg. See the book pages come alive along with every step you take and learn more about the enigma of the “Russian Soul”.

As a fan of Russian literature, I knew that I wanted to incorporate something of Dostoyevsky, Gogol, and Pushkin into our day. Maria was very patient and helpful as we planned our tour via email. The day of the tour, visas fro my wife and I were available via computer to passport control (the grumpiest passport control personnel we have ever encountered); our guide Sergei, and driver Max, were waiting for us with our private car. Each of them provided genuinely stellar service throughout the day.To say that the tour was informative would be a gross understatement — from insights into the St. Petersburg of the great Russian writers (I now possess a visual of St Petersburg that I never had when first reading Crime & Punishment), his level of knowledge regarding the three churches we visited (i.e. Peter & Paul Fortress and Church, St. Issac’s, and Church of Spilled Blood), and then his ability to converse intelligently regarding the parts of the collection at the Hermitage that we experienced (from Italians, to Dutch, Flemish, and items from an archeological discovery) was simply not to be believed. A nice, quiet lunch at an authentically local restaurant was a welcome break, and an opportunity for relaxed conversation.

Our day, nearly ten hours in length, was a highlight not just of this trip, but one of the very best we have enjoyed in any of our travels.

Nikita is a true professional. He answered many questions by email before our trip, always in timely fashion. We toured the main Hermitage gallery as well as the Impressionist gallery. We also visited Catherine the Great's summer palace and grounds. Maria, our tour guide, was terrific: experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly. We talked to her about Dostoyevsky and Akhmatova-we were going to visit their museum/residences-and she was eager to engage on the topic. Maria also helped get us tickets to a classical music program, Russian Seasons, and on the night of the concert, he even called to help us get in the door-there was some difficulty finding the right entrance (our fault). Nikita met with us and Maria at the summer palace, and we had a nice chat. We don't know how the service provided could have been better, and we highly recommend the company and the guide, Maria.
